The first question that arised in my mind when I heard of blogs for the first time was What is a blog and What is a website. It is very confusing for sure, when we don’t know the real difference between blog and website. Just like me, many newbies get stuck on the point here. So let’s just clear the confusion now.
Difference between Blog and Website
A blog is a web log that a blogger uses for reverse-chronologically listing the posts. The most recent post is shown at the top and the previously written post is shown after it. A blog can be created using famous blogging platforms like WordPress, Blogger, Joomla etc. which provide various designs and customization options.
Blogs are generally more informally presented to the readers than websites. Each post in a blog has a static page which is linked from the home page, but the home page is dynamic with most recently updated posts shown at the top.
Blogs and websites cannot be distinguished from their URLs or domain names. A blog can have self hosted .com, .org, .net or any other TLDs (Top Level Domains) as well as a hosted domain like .wordpress.com and .blogspot.com, while websites mostly have a self hosted top level domain.
Basic properties of a blog:
- A reverse-chronological listing of blog posts.
- RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds for blog posts and comments for feed readers. eg: Feedly, FeedBurner etc.
- Provide commenting system.
- Frequently updated.
- Frequently crawled by search engines.
- Blog posts are archived by date, author, label etc.
All blogs are websites but all websites are not blogs
I hope this post clears your doubts about difference between blog and website. If you want many features in your online portal other than just posting, start a website. If you just want to write content online and publish it, start a blog.
